31 Year Old Heil Heat Pump Lives to Cool Another Day After a Quality Heat Pump Repair in Johnson City, TN

We received a call from a new customer in Johnson City, TN requesting a heat pump repair on his newly purchased home. He said that the unit felt like it was heating his home even though he had the thermostat set in the cooling mode. We advised him to turn off his unit and met up with the customer after he got off of work in the evening.

When we arrived we took a look at his thermostat, indoor unit, and outdoor unit to get an initial assessment of what was there. We opened up the outdoor unit's electrical panel and it was a mess. We had the customer turn the thermostat to cooling while we monitored the outdoor unit. From experience, we knew immediately that the heat pump was stuck in heating mode once it fired up. We tested incoming low voltage to the outdoor unit and we had a 24-volt call for the reversing valve solenoid coil to energize. This 31 year old heat pump utilized a high voltage reversing valve solenoid coil to shift the pilot tube on the reversing valve in order to run the heat pump in cooling mode. We verified that we did have 240 volts going to the reversing valve solenoid coil, but the unit was not cooling.

We pulled the outdoor disconnect and popped the top on the heat pump. We had the customer turn off the call for cooling. Once we opened the top of the unit we could smell a burnt electrical smell coming from inside the outdoor unit. We noticed that the reversing valve solenoid coil was burnt and cracked apart. We did not have a 240-volt solenoid coil on the van. We contacted the local Heil dealer and checked availability on the part. We quoted the customer a price for the repair and he agreed to repair the system. We contacted the Heil dealer back and ordered the OEM Heil high voltage reversing valve solenoid coil.

When the part arrived we picked it up from the Heil dealer in Gray. We scheduled a time to meet the customer after he got off of work. We replaced the faulty solenoid coil on his heat pump. We cleaned up the electrical cabinet and ran the wires securely from the coil to their location inside the cabinet. We fired the system in cooling mode and verified proper operation of the system. The unit was now cooling instead of heating the home. We took a temperature split between return and supply as well and cycled the unit to confirm that is was working as it should.
