Thorough Heat Pump Repair in Jonesborough, TN Gets the Customer Going Again

We received a call from a new customer in Jonesborough, TN in need of a heat pump repair on their packaged heat pump. They said that everything seemed to be working fine and then all of the sudden nothing was working anymore. When we arrived at their home in Jonesborough, TN we realized that they had no low voltage power at the thermostat between R & C, but they did have high voltage at the outdoor packaged heat pump.

We located the low voltage fuse inside the outdoor unit and it was popped. Luckily, this unit utilized a low voltage fuse to help protect the system’s transformer, otherwise we would have been replacing the transformer as well. We isolated the problem wire that popped the low voltage fuse using our short pro tool and a 3-amp little popper in unison. We determined that the issue on the low voltage circuits was isolated to the O wire. They had a low voltage short to ground on the O wire. Anytime the reversing valve was energized the O wire was touching the case of the packaged heat pump because the protective coating had been rubbed through on the wire. The protective grommet had come loose from their unit and it allowed the O wire to rub through because it was touching the metal casing and the vibrations over time had compromised its protective coating.

We repaired the O wire, replaced the low voltage fuse, put the grommet into its proper place, and fired the unit back up. This time the unit was not shorting to ground on the low voltage circuit and the unit began to work again. We cycled the unit a few times to confirm that we didn’t have any other issues with the machine and called it good to go.
